  • BJP's Bold Budget in Delhi: Ambitious Plans Amid Rising Debt and Skepticism

Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made a historic budget speech on March 25, 2025, marking her first-ever budget presentation since taking office. The speech, which stretched over two hours, was the longest in the history of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. The budget's outlay of ₹1,00,000 crore  was a staggering 31.6% higher than the previous year, cementing it as the most ambitious fiscal plan the capital has ever seen. Delhi’s Historic Budget: Ambitious Plans for Growth Amid Rising Debt and Skepticism With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reclaiming power in Delhi after 26 years, the new government made a strong statement, aligning the budget with the themes that helped them win the recent elections. The BJP's campaign had centered around the promise of a “double engine government,” emphasizing development through robust cooperation between the state and the central government. This budget reflects that vision with significant backing from the Centre, signaling an aggressive approach to both development and welfare. During Gupta’s speech, the dominant chants of “Modi, Modi” and the frequent thumping of desks from BJP members underscored the central role Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the national government would play in implementing the ambitious agenda. Gupta’s remarks often highlighted the pivotal contribution of the Centre in fulfilling the BJP's election promises and ensuring the capital's advancement. However, as the budget rolled out its bold projections, questions were raised about the sustainability and feasibility of such an expansive fiscal plan. While the figure of ₹1,00,000 crore may look impressive, concerns about Delhi’s rising debt and the overall financial health of the state lingered in the background. The Promise of Change vs. Rising Debt Despite the grand claims of transformative change and development, the budget's ambitious scope faces an underlying challenge: the state's ballooning debt. The latest financial reports indicate that Delhi’s debt is rapidly increasing, which could strain the government's ability to meet its obligations in the near future. Critics argue that while the budget's scale is impressive, it may only deepen the state’s financial instability unless accompanied by concrete plans to manage or reduce the debt burden. Additionally, skepticism persists about the execution of many welfare schemes that had been central to the BJP’s electoral promises. Despite repeated references to new initiatives and reforms, many of the welfare programs outlined in the budget resemble older, unfulfilled promises. Critics point out that these programs were already part of the political discourse under previous administrations but were either delayed or underfunded. The true test will be whether this government can move beyond rhetoric and deliver on its promises. A Budget Focused on Development The core of Gupta's budget focuses heavily on infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and social welfare schemes. In line with the "double engine government" narrative, the BJP leadership has stressed that the central government’s support will provide the necessary push to drive Delhi’s growth. The budget seeks to enhance Delhi's infrastructure with new transport projects, while also proposing significant increases in funding for healthcare facilities and social security. Despite this focus on development, critics have pointed out that the new government must be careful not to replicate the mistakes of previous administrations, where high promises were not matched by effective implementation. Many of these schemes have been announced before, leaving some to question whether the new administration can deliver tangible results. The Road Ahead: Can BJP Deliver on its Ambitious Budget? As Delhi embarks on a new phase under the BJP’s leadership , the budget serves as a bold statement of intent. But questions about its long-term sustainability remain. Will the financial backing from the Centre be enough to stabilize Delhi’s debt and ensure the successful delivery of the proposed schemes? Or will the ambitious outlay only add to the growing financial burden? For now, Delhi's residents, lawmakers, and business leaders will be watching closely. The BJP has set high expectations, and the coming months will reveal whether it can turn its record-breaking budget into a reality or whether the capital’s growing debt and unfulfilled promises will overshadow its plans for transformation.

  • Ishan Kishan Takes a Lighthearted Dig at Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan Over Appeals

Ishan Kishan , the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, recently poked fun at Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan for his over-enthusiastic appeals behind the stumps. The remark came in a casual conversation with Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary, which Kishan shared on his social media account. In the video, Kishan humorously explained why he prefers to keep his appeals measured on the field, taking a swipe at Rizwan’s frequent and fervent appeals. Ishan Kishan The exchange took place when Chaudhary commented on Kishan’s improved approach to appeals, saying, “You’ve matured and now only appeal when it’s necessary. Earlier, you appealed for almost everything. What brought about this change?” To which the 26-year-old wicketkeeper responded, “Umpires have become wiser. If I appeal for every single ball, even the ones that are obviously out, they might just start giving them not out. Instead, I now appeal only when I’m sure, and that builds the umpire's confidence in the right calls.” Kishan then playfully used Rizwan as an example of what not to do. He jokingly added, “Warna abhi (Mohammad) Rizwan type kuch karunga toh phir aap log ek bhi baar nahi denge,” implying that if he acted like Rizwan, who is known for his loud and insistent appeals, the umpires would never give him a favorable decision again. Rizwan, a quality wicketkeeper and the captain of Pakistan's white-ball team , has often faced criticism for his vocal and persistent appeals, sometimes even when the decision was clearly not out. His exuberance behind the stumps has occasionally irked both umpires and opposition players alike. Kishan’s lighthearted remark highlights the differences in approach between him and Rizwan when it comes to appealing for dismissals. While Kishan prefers a more composed and strategic approach, Rizwan’s vocal presence has become a signature part of his on-field demeanor. In addition to the playful banter, Kishan also discussed the importance of confident decision-making by umpires. He expressed that while players have their preferences for certain umpires, there is always room for improvement. He emphasized that umpires should trust their judgment and make decisions without being swayed by the volume of the appeal. Ishan Kishan, who had an outstanding start to the IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, also spoke about his form. After being picked up for ₹11 crore, he made a remarkable debut for SRH, scoring 106* off just 47 balls in a thrilling match against Rajasthan Royals, helping his team post an imposing total of 286. Kishan and SRH will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming home match against Lucknow Super Giants as they aim to build on their strong start to the season.

  • Rohan Jaitley Set to Become BCCI Secretary If Jay Shah Takes ICC Chairmanship

Rohan Jaitley , President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), is emerging as a strong candidate to replace Jay Shah as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This move is contingent on Shah assuming the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). While Shah has yet to file his nomination for the ICC position, growing support within the BCCI suggests that Rohan Jaitley, son of the late politician Arun Jaitley, is being considered as his successor. Rohan Jaitley Rohan Jaitley: The Leading Candidate for BCCI Secretary According to reports, Rohan Jaitley is widely seen as the frontrunner for the position of BCCI Secretary. His candidacy is gaining traction, particularly within BCCI circles, where officials are rallying behind him for the role. The position became vacant after Jay Shah, who has held the post since 2019, was expected to transition to the ICC chairmanship. Though there are other potential candidates, including former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Avishek Dalmiya, Punjab's Dilsher Khanna, Goa's Vipul Phadke, and Chhattisgarh’s Prabhtej Bhatia, Jaitley stands out as the leading choice. His growing influence in cricket administration makes him the ideal candidate for the role, should Shah move to the ICC. Will Jay Shah Become the ICC Chairman? The speculation around Jay Shah's future intensified when Greg Barclay, the current ICC Chairman, announced that he would step down at the end of his third term in November 2025. Shah is seen as the likely candidate for the role, having the support of 15 out of 16 ICC Board members. With the nomination deadline approaching on August 27, 2025, Shah must decide whether to make the move. If Shah proceeds with his nomination, he would become the youngest-ever ICC Chairman. This would be a significant step in his cricket career, following in the footsteps of Indian cricket legends like Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, and N. Srinivasan, who have held the prestigious role in the past. What Happens Next in BCCI? If Shah transitions to the ICC, Rohan Jaitley will likely take over as the BCCI Secretary, solidifying his position within Indian cricket administration. This change comes at a crucial time as the BCCI prepares for several major international tournaments and domestic reforms. With significant leadership shifts on the horizon, the coming months will be critical in shaping the future of Indian cricket governance.

The opposition party has accused the Congress-led government of targeting religious institutions and undermining Sanatan Dharma  under the pretext of revenue generation. The Controversial Decision The state government has reportedly asked prominent temples to contribute a portion of their earnings to support public welfare and development projects. • BJP MLA Compares Atishi to Surpanakha in Fresh Attack on AAP

BJP MLA likens Atishi to Surpanakha, sparks controversy. BJP MLA has launched a sharp attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi, comparing her to Surpanakha, a character from the Ramayana. This remark has triggered outrage within AAP, with party leaders accusing the BJP of indulging in personal and sexist attacks instead of focusing on governance. The Controversial Statement The BJP legislator’s comment was made during a political rally, where he drew a parallel between Atishi and Surpanakha, a figure from Hindu mythology often depicted as a demoness who faced rejection and humiliation. In his speech, the MLA also took a swipe at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, hinting that their political careers were nearing an end. The remarks come at a time when tensions between BJP and AAP are already high, especially in the backdrop of legal troubles facing AAP leaders, including allegations of corruption and governance failures. AAP’s Sharp Response AAP leaders have hit back strongly, calling the comparison "misogynistic and derogatory." They argue that BJP is resorting to character assassination instead of engaging in meaningful political discourse. Atishi herself responded, stating that such personal attacks only reveal the BJP’s desperation and lack of real issues to counter AAP’s governance model in Delhi. Wider Political Impact Escalating BJP-AAP Rivalry:  The BJP has been consistently targeting AAP over issues such as the excise policy case, corruption allegations, and governance failures in Delhi and Punjab. While BJP may see this as a way to energize its base, it could also backfire by alienating voters who view it as an unnecessary personal attack .

The party is focusing on issues like job creation, farmer rights, inflation control, and corruption-free governance. Leaders are engaging in direct dialogues with citizens to present CPM as a credible alternative. Despite these hurdles, CPM sees the 2026 Assembly elections as a critical moment to reposition itself as a key player in Bengal politics. The coming months will determine whether its revamped strategy can translate into electoral success. The 2026 elections will be a major test for the party’s new approach . If it successfully reconnects with the masses and presents a strong opposition to both TMC and BJP, CPM could regain some of its lost ground.
